Though they usually have to bear it for at least the first year, most U.S. university

students end dorm life as soon as they can. Residence(住校)choices at U.S. colleges and universities are as different as the institutions themselves, but the first-year dorm experience is generally a mandatory rite(仪式)of passage. Students often complain about the space, but compared with most Chinese dorm rooms those in the U.S. are costly and satisfying. Most students spend their first year in a double room, usually with an area of somewhere between 12 and 15 square meters. A standard room includes a sink(washbasin), a telephone, a bunk-bed, two desks and two wardrobes. Rooms often come equipped with cable TV and broadband Internet access. Students usually provide other extras for themselves-they buy or rent a mini-refrigerator and bring along a carpet, a computer and audiovisual equipment. Roommates are usually chosen by chance from among all the new students at the university, so it's quite likely you won't share any classes with your roommate. It's not only the lack of space, but the many rules that make students feel they've had enough after a year. Rules on visitors of the opposite sex and alcohol are considered by many as the most bothersome(讨厌的)。 Some students put much effort into making their rooms different, especially by using paint, but this can lead to fines. Many students who leave move into an apartment or share a house with friends. This offers more freedom and sometimes even costs less than residence hall living. But a few grow fond of dorm life and stay on for another year or even longer. The most devoted go on to serve as resident assistants, the enforcers(执行者)of rules.

Some people hate everything that is modern. They cannot imagine how anyone can really l
ike modern music; they find it hard to accept the new fashions in clothing; they think that all modern painting is ugly; and they seldom have a good word for the new buildings that are being built everywhere in the world.Such people look for perfection in everything, and they take their standards of perfection from the past. They are usually impatient with anyone who is brave enough to experiment with new or to express himself or the age in any original ways.It is, of course, true that many artists do not succeed in their work and instead produce works that can only be considered as failures. If the work of art is a pamting, the artist's failure concerns himself alone, but if it is a building, his failure concerns others too, because it may damage the beauty of the whole place. This does sometimes happen, but it is completely untrue to say, as some people do, that modern architecture is nothing.

We can't judge every modern building by the standards of the ancient time, even though we admire the ancient buildings.Technologically, the modern buildings are more advanced.

The modern architect knows he should learn from the ancient works, but with his greater resources of knowledge and materials, he will never be content to imitate the past.He is too proud to do that.

C.concerns only the artist

D.concerns all the people in the world

24.The writer thinks that ().

A.we can't judge buildings by the ancient standards

B.we can't judge all the buildings by the ancient standards

The history of English is conventionally, if perhaps too neatly, divided into three pe
riods usually called Old (or Anglo-Saxon) English, Middle English, and Modern English. The earliest period begins with the migration of certain Germanic tribes from the continent to Britain in the fifth century A.D., though no records of their language survive from before the seventh century, and it continues until the end of the eleventh century or a bit later.By that time, Latin, Old Norse (the language of the Viking invaders), and especially the Anglo-Norman French of the dominant class after the Norman Conquest in 1066 had begun to have a substantial impact on the vocabulary, and the well-developed inflectional(词尾变化的)system that typify the grammar of Old English had began to break down.

The period of Middle English extends roughly from the twelfth century through the fifteenth. The influence of French(and Latin, often by way of French)upon the vocabulary continued throughout the period, the loss of some inflections and the reduction of others accelerate, and many changes took place within the grammatical systems of the language.A typical prose passage, especially one from the later part of the period, will not have such a foreign look to us as the prose of Old English, but it will not be mistaken for contemporary writing either.

The period of Modern English extends from the sixteenth century to our own day.The early part of this period saw the completion of a revolution in vowel distribution that had began in late Middle English and that effectively brought the language to something resembling its present pattern.Other important early developments include the stabilizing effect on spelling of the printing press and the beginning of the direct influence of Latin, and to a lesser extent.Greel pm the vocabulary.Later, as English came into contact with other cultures around the world and distinctive dialects of English developed in the many areas which Britain had colonized, numerous other languages made small but interesting contributions to our word-stock.

A.from the seventh century

D.from the ninth century

2.What is the main features of the grammar of Old English?()

A.The influence of Latin

B.A revolution in vowel distribution

C.A well-developed inflectional system

D.Loss of some inflection

3.What can be inferred from the passage?()

A.Even an educated person cannot read old English without special training

B.A person who knows French well can understand old English

C.An educated person can understand old English but cannot pronounce it

D.A person can pronounce old English words but cannot understand them

4.Which of the following is NOT mentioned?()

A.French

B.Latin

C.Greek

D.German

5.What is the most remarkable characteristic of Modern English?()

A.Numerous additions to its vocabulary.

B.Completion of a revolution in vowel distribution.
