The holiday shopping season got off to a flying start over the thanksgiving weekend in

the u.s.retailers(零售商) attracted discount-hungry consumers with specials(特价商品) of television, dvd players and other gift. discounters like wal-mart and target had the greatest success, offering customers early bird specials, while major department stores and clothing chains only met modest sales goals. online sales were also strong.

“it was as expected. it wasn’t source of great prosperity, but it was a good start,” said nevill, a man in a us retail consulting firm. he said, “one thing we often heard was that only things marked down(降价) were selling. consumers want a bargain, especially around the holiday.” shoppers did seem to like the many markdowns. a lady in the state of Connecticut said, “i’ve never seen so many sales. i feel like a kid in a candy store.”

Nevill estimated that discounters had a 4% gain over last year’s thanksgiving figure, while sales at department stores and mall-based clothing chains were up 2% for the weekend. however, the thanksgiving weekend is not necessarily a good way to judge how retailers will be successful for the season. over the past few years, the weekend accounted for less than 10% of sales.

Edward rose early on the New-year morning. He looked in every room and wished a Happy N
ew Year to his family. Then he ran into the street to repeat that to those he might meet.

When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars .

His face lighted up as he took them.He had wished for a long time to buy some petty books that he had seen at the bookstore.

He left the house with a light heart, expecting to buy the books. As he ran down the street, he saw a poor family.

“I wish you a happy New Year.” said Edward, as he was happily passing on.The man shook his head.

When Edward came home, his father asked what books he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up.

“I have bought no books,” said he, “I gave my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry then.” He went on, “I think I can wait for my books till next New Year.”

“My dear boy,” said his father, “Here are some books, more as a reward for your goodness of heart than as a New-Year gift”.

“I saw you give the money cheerfully to the poor German family. It was nice for a little boy to do so.Be always ready to help others and every year of your life will be to you a Happy New Year.”

Christmas Gift

Mary didn’t know what to send to her grandparents for Christmas. It was always hard to choose a good Christmas present for them. They didn’t need much, and it was hard for her to be creative every year.

One year, she sent them a big wooden elephant. It sat on the counter for a year, but then it disappeared, probably into a closet somewhere. Another year, she made handmade soaps with nice smells, but they probably weren’t any better than store-bought soaps. Last year, she sent lots of nice pictures of herself in frames, but grandparents’ house was small, and they couldn’t hang up very many.

This year, she decided on fruit. She lived where it was warm and there was lots of nice fruit. Her grandparents lived up north, where it colder and they couldn’t get fresh fruit all year, or at least not oranges and grapefruit. Fresh fruit was healthy for her grandparents, too.

Mary went to a fruit store and sampled the red oranges. She really liked them and bought a kilogram. Then she tried three kinds of grapefruit. The white ones were sour. The star grapefruit were interesting, but the dark red grapefruit were great. So she got a kilogram.

Mary carefully packed the fruit in a box to keep them safe and dry in case one got smashed and its juice got everywhere. Then she wrote the address on the box and mailed it from the store. She felt happy with what she bought.

A few days later, Mary got a phone call from her grandparents, thanking her for the lovely fruit. They said it was a healthy, tasty, and very thoughtful gift. Mary had never felt sogood before.
