The ant looked up and saw the young girl sitting in front of a huge pile of seeds.
“Why are you sad?” asked the ant.
“I'm the prisoner of a giant.”the girl told the ant.“He won't let me go until I've made three separate heaps of grain, barley(大麦)and rye(黑麦)out of this huge pile of seeds in which they are all mixed together.”
“That will take you a month!” the ant said, looking at the huge pile of seeds.
“I know,”the girl cried, “and if I haven't finished by tomorrow, the giant will eat me for his supper!”
“Don't cry,”the ant said, “my friends and I will help you.”
Soon thousands of ants were at work, separating the three kinds of seeds.
The next morning, when the giant saw that the work had been done, he let the girl go.

rning, they found a dog in their garden. They took the dog in, gave it some meat, and watched it go into a corner and go to sleep. They decided to let the animal stay overnight, and to look for its owner in the morning. Then they left home to pay a visit to their daughter in Inverness.
They came home at about eleven. As they opened the front door, they were welcomed by a snarling (狂吠的) boxer, standing with bared teeth. Any attempt to calm the animal met with angry barking. Soon all the neighbors were awake, and came out to offer helpful advice.
Then the fire brigade was called. They arrived at midnight. But all their attempts only made the dog more violent. They couldn’t get near it. The fire brigade gave up and called the police. When they arrived, it was one in the morning, and nearly all the villagers were gathered in MacGregor’s garden. The police thought about it. They advised that the dog should be shot.
However, someone went for an expert dog handler. This expert arrived at two in the morning with a huge Alsatian. He said, “This won’t take long”.
But it did. Two animals stood and stared and snarled at each other. It was a draw.
Then a vet (兽医) was sent for. By the time he arrived, it was 4 a.m. He borrowed a rope, made a lasso (套索), and threw the loop over the boxer’s head.
He dragged it into the garden, stuck a needle in it, and put it to sleep. The police removed it.

I remembered our happy growingup years in a small town in West Virginia. With good family education, Jerry had been a kind kid. He was only 15 when Dad died. Unlike him, I got over the sorrow soon, but he started drinking. Soon he began hanging out with bad guys.
Jerry and I didn’t see each other often, but we talked on the phone. Usually, though, we ended up fighting. When Mom came to live with us, Jerry dropped in regularly at first, but after a while his visits became sporadic. He explained he couldn’t handle seeing Mom in such a bad condition. Another excuse, I thought.
One day I went to see the doctor about my back.It had been aching for months.“I can’t find anything wrong with you physically,”the doctor said.“But I can tell you’re very tense. Is something bothering you?” I poured out my story about Jerry.“Do you think he’s likely to change?” he asked. I shrugged.“Probably not.”“But,you can, ”he said gently.
Me? Why did I have to change? He was the one who constantly let us down. But what had I done? Maybe the doctor was right. I couldn’t love his behavior, but I could love him—the way I did when we were little. As I walked into the house I sensed a relief.
Jerry died young due to drinking .I miss him. But I’m grateful I was given the opportunity to show him I loved him—as he was, not as I wanted him to be.
